What are stablecoins?

Opposite to fiat cryptocurrencies, which create their own form of money, stablecoins are tied to the price of another asset (or grouping of assets, for example, the U.S. dollar or gold) in order to minimise volatility and stabilise the price, while maintaining the benefits of a cryptocurrency. The pro arguments for stablecoins are that even though fiat cryptocurrencies are better than fiat currency due to their portability, anonymity and security, they are still unstable because of unpredictable and extreme fluctuations in their price. And this makes them hard for people to use every day. One of the most well-known stablecoins is Tether, whose price is tied to a stable asset, in this case the U.S. dollar.
