Initial exchange offering (IEO)

An IEO or initial exchange offering is a token distribution event that is specifically conducted on a cryptocurrency exchange platform. Similar to initial coin offerings (ICOs), IEOs are a fundraising method for many blockchain and crypto oriented companies. As the token sale is being conducted on the exchange’s platform, token issuers have to pay a listing fee along with a percentage of the tokens sold during the IEO. In return, the tokens of the crypto startup are sold and their coins are listed after the IEO is concluded. Because of that, it is in the exchange’s interest to help with the marketing operations, since they take a percentage of the tokens sold.

IEO participants do not send their contributions to a smart contract, like in the case of ICOs. Instead, they have to create an account on the exchange’s platform, where the IEO will be conducted.

The SEC has released guidance recommending caution when investing in IEOs and warning that IEOs may be conducted in violation of  federal securities laws and may lack many of the investor protections of registered and exempt securities offerings.
